REFELCTION
Q: What is your opinion of image editing? Use Glenn Feron's works as examples.

A:
After looking at Glenn Feron’s work, all I could think was “wow.” It’s truly amazing that an image can be altered so much from the original. A few that stood out to me were the following:

http://glennferon.com./portfolio1/portfolio11.html The model’s head was tilted a different way in the original, and where did the remote come from?

http://glennferon.com./portfolio1/portfolio14.html I was shocked to see that a whole arm could be moved to look like the model was posing a completely different way.

http://glennferon.com./portfolio1/portfolio22.html This one went from a girl posing by a car in her garage to an advertisement!

http://glennferon.com./portfolio1/portfolio30.html This image stood out to me as being particularly over edited- her makeup doesn’t look natural and there are no creases on her face, which immediately makes me think she looks too altered, even if I didn’t know this image had been edited.

http://glennferon.com./portfolio1/portfolio38.html I feel as though the look of this man doesn’t need to be altered as much as Glenn has done. In our society, sometimes it seems okay to edit women so much, but men are supposed to remain unchanged and more “natural.” Getting rid of his scruffy face and smile lines by his eyes makes him seem less human to me, and more like a doll (which is somehow okay for women to look like).

http://glennferon.com./portfolio1/portfolio66.html To me, this image is edited well. I think that since the coloring is changed and what he did with her face didn’t change too much, this is acceptable for portraying the original because it is an “obvious” edit.

http://glennferon.com./portfolio1/portfolio82.html HOW DID HE DO THIS? It amazes me how Glenn could change her hair so much- such detailed work!

For the most part, I think that Glenn does a great job with his work, perfecting people and making them seemingly flawless. Considering the controversy about editing, though, I do think that some of the images he has edited are a little over the top and distort the original too much. We are all human, so to me, some of the “imperfections” (smile lines, freckles, dimples, etc.) are what makes us special and who we are. For commercial use, it can be okay to “fix” things in photos, but the pictures of the baby particularly bothered me…why does a baby’s face need to be edited? It is true that the camera never lies, but when manipulated, images can lie. This can be good or bad, depending on the scenario. I believe the art of editing and retouching is a creative process, which enables the “artist” to see a photo in a new light.
